Recently, my grandfather told me that my grandmother used to host regular “Consciousness Raising Groups” of women in the living room of their home.

These groups spoke to a necessity of their time: feminism. My grandmother — a distinguished English professor, published author, fiery feminist, and beloved mother — held them proudly. Every month or so, she gathered the women (no husbands or sons allowed!) so they could share ideas, hope, frustration, and laughter surrounding the vital matter of their collective empowerment.

You’ll imagine my half-surprise in learning this piece of family lore… About 6 months after I started my own women’s circle here in San Diego. My inspiration — pulled from thin air and, evidently, something bone deep — is clear: gather the women. Heal together. Let the medicine of sisterhood heal.

Since last August, we have been gathering each month in the living room of my La Jolla home, answering our natural inspiration. Each month, we explore a different theme and sequence of activities, occasionally joined by other facilitators.

Will you join us this time? This Saturday afternoon, February 1, around the New Moon. 🌹

We will be connecting with the spirit of our grandmothers, both living and living in our hearts. We will give thanks for the goodness inherited from them — and consider with humility what of their life’s legacy we are called to change. And continue. We will call on them for guidance and strength.

Please bring photos of your grandmothers (or women who have been like grandmothers to you) and any sentimental or sacred items that remind you of them (like their favorite flowers or colors, perhaps). We will place these items on our central altar. Bring, also, a journal and pen.
